This week happens to be National Women’s Health Week, and the month of May is National Mental Health Month. So I thought– what a great time to write a blog post that speaks to both! One of my passions is helping women realize their full potential and find ways to truly honor themselves. This day and age is incredibly busy for everyone (men included), but women tend to be the ones silently suffering. More and more women are caring for their aging parents while still raising their o... Read More
The story goes that a reporter conducting an interview with Thomas Edison asked him about the development process of inventing the light bulb and why it had taken Edison thousands of attempts before finally “getting it right.” Edison’s reply? “Those weren’t failures. I simply did not realize there were 10,000 steps to creating the light bulb.” So many of us tend to see our mistakes as tally marks in the “loser” column of our lives. “Oh, I should have known better!... Wouldn’t’ it be nice if parenting came with a step by step instructional guide for every behavior that is displayed by our children? What if parents could at least get a big red warning sign that says STOOOOP, the teenage years are here. Unfortunately, it does not work that way, parenting would be too easy. However, there are some guidelines that would at least assist with the journey of parenting. When dealing with the behaviors of our children we must first learn to determ... Read More
It's true, the government says so..... This isn't the first blog I'd intended to post here, but after reading the news, I couldn't help but add my thoughts. A preschool student at West Hoke Elementary School in North Carolina ended up eating three chicken nuggets for lunch two weeks ago -- because a state inspector declared that the 4-year-old's lunch wasn't nutritious enough. The turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips and apple juice, according to the Carolina Jour... Read More
Today is Valentine's Day!!! In the mind of an elementary school kid....today is Can't Get Enough Candy Day. In schools across the country, little one's will be extending little paper cards of friendship not to one kid or a select few but to their entire classroom. As adults, we can stand to learn a little from this. Equal-Opportunity Valentine Cards enable kids to learn forgiveness and how to put their feelings aside for the sake of the common good. The thing... Read More
Yes, Cruise Ships are Safe! By Capt. John L. Beath Costa Cruise Line’s recent disaster has many wondering if cruise ships are safe. Blame for the terrible, and avoidable accident has been squarely blamed on Captain Francesco Schettino– a captain with the cruise line since 2006. This tragedy could have and should have been avoided by simply following company protocols. Schettino’s decision, for whatever reason, to deviate from pre-programmed routing put the... Read More

I sat down at my computer this morning and wondered why the screen was so blurry. I have one very bad eye and one very good one. Over the years, the bad one got lazier and lazier letting the good one do all the work "OK fine, you focus, I'll just rest over here and look pretty". Over the years, it's taken it's toll. The good eye has gotten weaker and weaker. First there was reading glasses, then stronger reading glasses, then contacts, then contacts AND reading glas... Read More
Year after year, single moms have been getting creative on how to provide Christmas gifts for their children. One year my kids had a Dollar Store Christmas, I was terrified they would judge my mothering based on what they did and did not receive. They remember that time as one of the best Christmases ever because they knew I was doing all I could do to show them I cared. But when they went back to school they just kept the secret to themselves. &n... Read More
One of the many things that expectant parents begin to think about is choosing a doctor for their baby. Many parents want a pediatrician because  ;of their specialized training with infants and children. However, sometimes parents who have a family doctor they really like will choose to have the baby go to the same doctor they do. They like the idea of one doctor who knows the family health history caring for the entire family. Many family doctors love seeing babies and are extremely c... Read More
QuickBooks 2012 is out, is it a good upgrade? The short answer is yes, but with my usual cautionary statement of wait until it matures a bit. I don't recommend that you use the R1 release of QuickBooks in any year the R1 release is almost like a second stage beta release as it is pushed out to a lot of users. Although Intuit tests the first release a lot, it is hard to get it into EVERY kind of installation configuration that there is. Often we see that some problem that was ov... Read More
