WAFF did a quick story on this yesterday. Thought I'd pass along this information. Saferoom grants are available for Madison and Dekalb County Residents. You can learn more about the saferoom grants and severe weather safety by visiting http://www.madisoncountyema.com/saferoom.html

Funding for safe rooms orginates at the federal government level with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). States are given grant monies from FEMA which are typically distributed to local county emergency management offices. The state determines how much grant monies each county will recieve. The counties then are tasked with developing a fair system of distributing the monies to applicants who have met all the requirements and qualifications. At this time, no funds have been announced for Madison County. Once funding has been awarded, applicants will be contacted in the numerical order in which their application was received.

Several thousand Madison county residents have already applied, so be sure to sign up soon. They said it will take several months to process the applications but they will notify qualifying applicants via email or phone.
