For my son, one of his best birthday memories was when he was about 7 and an ice storm hit.  His birthday is 2 days before Christmas and we were without power for 5 days.  For dinner our birthday tradition was to cook steak and crab legs.  That year they were cooked over a kerosene heater.  It wasn't something huge, but it's a favorite memory.
